When people tuned in to watch Mighty Morphin Power Rangers in 1993, few of them would have predicted its longevity. In the years since, the franchise has endured. A plethora of different spinoffs exist. News publications such as the BBC regularly report on upcoming ones. There is also a thriving merchandise industry that produces toys and costumes of popular Power Ranger characters.
It is difficult to predict what the show will look like in the years to come. Initially, footage from the Japanese series Super Sentai would be utilised. American producers then needed to shoot a story that matched these action sequences. However, recently higher budgets have allowed US TV companies to create Power Rangers shows entirely in-house. Consequently, the narrative arcs are no longer dictated by Super Sentai. This makes it harder for fans to guess where the following seasons are headed.
A Return to Camp
Fans were excited in 2014 with the announcement of a return to the Mighty Morphin version of the franchise. This ended up becoming a darker, modernised reimagining. The 2017 film recasts many of the iconic characters from the original series. However, its reception was mixed. Many fans were disappointed by the shift in tone. Much of the campy charm had gone. If a new series or movie were to be created, it would need to address this issue. A lot of long-time viewers would welcome a return to the lighter fun of season one.
Bringing Back Old Characters
One popular decision of the remake was to feature Zordon, Alpha, and Rita Repulsa. More people are likely to tune in to newer seasons if these figures make a return. Other well-known faces could also be brought back. The producer might even decide to reunite the original cast, who knows?
