Introduction
Every kid born in the 1990s or 2000s is familiar with the live-action series popularly known as Power Rangers. The series is synonymous with live-action superhero television shows aimed at kids. The series began with Mighty Morphin Power Rangers in 1993 and quickly gained widespread popularity as a staple kids program. It also helped generate massive sales of action figures and other toys cementing the brand’s commercial value. The franchise came into being after American and Japanese producers in adapting the Super Sentai series for a western audience. Although first targeted at western audiences, it didn’t take long before the Power Rangers franchise grew big enough to gain steam in most international markets, especially Asia.
Growing success of the Franchise
The franchise continued to produce their unique Power rangers formula but in different settings and themes. Some of them are Power Rangers S.P.D, Mystic Force, Dino Thunder, Wild Force, and many more. It diversified their portfolio while giving the audience the opportunity to choose and watch from the huge number of shows available. Soon after the branding began to expand and there were countless power rangers toys, brand tie-ins, comics, movie adaptations, et cetera which catapulted the franchise to new heights.
One could argue the variety of shows that Power Rangers offered was a key ingredient in their overall success. As it is pretty common for shows to get stale when they don’t engage the audience well and refuse to try unique formulas. For kids shows, this becomes increasingly important as kids don’t have a high attention span and quickly move on from one show to the next. The wide variety of shows available let their imagination run wild and see themselves in the superheroes that fight huge monsters and evil creatures on the screen. The visual effects and vibrant colours of characters added much-needed style and visual flavour to the show making the show much more digestible for a kid’s mind. Hence it isn’t difficult to decipher the widespread success of the franchise.
